school, chess tournament, electricians

another flat tire????

so, i had another flat tire on saturday on my to school. this time it was the back tire. unbelievable. if it happens again, i am going to buy new tires. life is such an adventure.
we have electricity today which we are very thankful for. i am currently watching the electricity lines being installed outside. they don't have the nice trucks with the lift here. the workmen just climb up the pole and do all their work with a rope tied around them. i will post some pictures of the workman. on thursday a friend and i took a city bus into a nearby township to get some lunch. well, i think the bus got lost or something because we definitely didn't go the way that i was expecting. other people on the bus where trying to tell the driver the way to go, but he definitely seemed lost. i told the driver where i wanted to go and eventually he told me that i had better get off because we had come to the end of the town. well, we had no idea where we were. we decided to get into a petty cab( a three-wheel bike with a bench seat in the back. it is a taxi bike). I told the driver where we wanted to go and 10 minutes later we arrived at the place we wanted to be. it seemed so funny though that the city bus driver didn't know where he was going.

flat tire

today on my way to school i got a flat tire. thankfully, nate was with me so I was able to park my bike and ride the rest of the way with him. it was too early to get it repaired because none of the shops were open. nate went back at 8am with a chinese friend to get it fixed. all is back to normal now. today is my birthday, so the flat tire was my first birthday present of the day. :)
School is going well. All the kids love our new school. It is so nice to have extra space for activities. We were so cramped in our old school. Living in China always has its adventures though. On Monday, we didn't have water the whole day. Yesterday, no electricity ( everyone was so cold, but the students hardly complained at all). Today has presented no school problems thus far. :)

snow or rain???

today was very cold...this morning, nate and i rode our scooters for the hour trip to school. we were ice cubes by the time we got to school. it is not a good idea to ride for an hour in the elements. we took the bus home and left our bikes at school. it slushed ( snow/rain) all day which was quite the event because it rarely snows here. Now I know that you are wondering, "how can they be complaining about the cold when it doesn't even snow?" well, the answer is two-fold. First, the rumor has it that it is so polluted here that the snow can't get through, even if it wanted to. Secondly, imagine being in the cold ALL day with no warm cars, rooms, houses, etc. That is why the cold is so hard to bear. Hopefully by Monday our heater units will be installed in our school rooms so we will have heat when school starts. Until then we will continue wearing our 5 layers, hats, scarves, mittens, wool socks, etc. to stay warm. :)
Tomorrow is open house at school, so we have been working hard to get the school building ready and clean. The library is getting closer to being completed, so hopefully I will be in it by the end of next week. Nate's class room is looking good....still waiting for desks to arrive ( hopefully before Monday). Some of the outside flooring still needs to be installed. The white boards got installed yesterday and they look great. Our school building is the first building in the development to be completed, so there is lots of construction going on all around us.
